Henry James Johnstone was a genre, landscape and figure painter.

Life:

In 1886 Johnstone entered into the membership of the Society of British Artists, the year in which the society elected JW its President.

Johnstone was active in the exhibiting world, showing in London at the Royal Academy, Society of British Artists, Dudley Gallery, Agnew and Sons Gallery, Arthur Tooth and Sons Gallery and the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers, a society which began its life under JW's Presidentship in 1898. He also exhibited at the Walker Gallery in Liverpool.

Johnstone was on friendly terms with JW in the 1890s, as JW's correspondence testifies (#09176).
