Identity:

Samuel Henry Jeyes was the editor of the London nespaper, the Standard. He married Gevieve Frances Sherman, daughter of Charles Edward Sherman of New York. He died at the age of 54 ('in his 55th year') in 1911 after a long illness.

Life:

He was Assistant Editor of the St James's Gazette from 1888, and moved to the Standard several years later. He contributed columns to several other papers including the Saturday Review. A moderate Conservative, he wrote several literary biographies included that of Mr Chamberlain: His Public Career, 1903. A friendly, witty and warm-hearted man (according to the Times), he was also a member of the Garrick Club.
