Hood was an army officer.
Two years senior to Whistler at the United States Military Academy at West Point, he resigned from the army in 1861. He was a distinguished if rash Confederate commander, much wounded, until his forces disastrously lost at Nashville to the army of George Henry Thomas. He plays a notable role in Mary Chestnut's Civil War diaries.
