Identity:

He was an Irish born American writer, playwright and author who edited prominent English periodicals, such as the Fortnightly Review and Saturday Review.

Life:

He also was a collector and bought two lithographs by JW from the Fine Art Society in 1895. JW was in contact with him in the late 1890s (see #05393 and #09921).

His colourful, scandalous and inventive autobiography, My Life, 1926, and his books on Wilde and Shaw, brought him some notoriety.
