Identity:
John Marshall Harlan was a Kentucky lawyer and politician. He married Malvina French Shanklin in 1856.
Life:
Harlan was admitted to the Kentucky bar in 1853 and went on to become a County Judge and Attorney General of Kentucky. He later became an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. He was a keen supporter of the Republican party and served on the Louisiana Electoral Commission although his hopes of election to the U.S. House of Representatives were never fulfilled. He is referred to in JW's correspondence about 1895.
