Identity:

Thomas Bush Hardy was a marine painter and watercolourist. He was the father of the painter, illustrator and poster designer Dudley Hardy.

Life:

Hardy's brightly coloured coastal scenes were immensely popular in his day. However, his later work was rather repetitive. He travelled on the Continent, in Holland and Italy. He exhibited in London at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour, Royal Society of Painters in Water Colour, Grosvenor Gallery, Society of British Artists, Fine Art Society, Dowdeswell Galleries, Agnew and Sons Gallery and Arthur Tooth and Sons Gallery, as well as at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and Manchester City Art Gallery.

In 1884 Hardy was elected a member of the Society of British Artists, a Society with which he exhibited between 1871 and 1897, and of which JW was President between 1886 and 1888. Hardy was amongst those members who demanded JW's resignation in 1888 (#05321).
