Identity:
Major Arthur Griffiths was a soldier, prisons inspector and author.
Life:
Early in his career he served in the Crimea in the Manchester Regiment and in Gibraltar before his return to England and a career in prison adminstration. He rose to become chief inspector of prisons. Alongside this he indulged his literary and journalistic interests, publishing several works on penal and military themes; Chronicles of Newgate was published in 1883 and Secrets of the Prison House in 1893.
