André Giroux was a landscape and genre painter.

Life:

Giroux, who entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1821, was active in exhibiting at the Salon between 1819 and 1872, showing landscape views of France, Italy, Austria and Switzerland. In 1822 he was awarded a second class medal and in 1831 a first class. He won the Prix de Rome in 1825 with Chasse de Méiéagre.

In 1867 JW sent four paintings and two etchings to the Exposition Universelle in Paris, including Crepuscule in Flesh Colour and Green: Valparaiso (YMSM 73). In a letter to George Lucas dating from March 1867, he writes that these works had been admired by Princess Mathilde, the Comte de Nieuwerkerke and Giroux, who said they would be given a good position on the line (#09191).
