Identity:

Joseph Crawhall was a watercolourist and painter of animals and landscape.

Life:

Crawhall was closely associated with Glasgow painters such as James Guthrie and E. A. Walton. He is best known for his watercolours on silk or linen and his drawings which owe much to eastern calligraphic art. He abandoned oil painting entirely in the mid 1880s.

In 1898, Crawhall was invited to exhibit at the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers when JW was President.

He later settled in Tangier, Morocco. Examples of his work are in the National Gallery of Scotland, and Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery, Glasgow.
