Identity:

Pierre Carrier-Belleuse, a painter and pastellist, was the son and pupil of the sculptor and designer Albert-Ernest Carrier who around 1868 adopted the name Carrier-Belleuse.

Life:

Pierre Carrier-Belleuse was also a pupil of P. V. Galland and Alexandre Cabanel at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was a painter of genre subjects and portraits in both oil and pastel.

Carrier-Belleuse was President of the International Society of Painting and Sculpture, when in March 1899 it appointed Whistler and Paul Albert Besnard as Honorary Presidents. Carrier-Belleuse wrote to inform Whistler and personally express his admiration and devotion to him (#05496). In December 1901 he invited Whistler to the opening of the Society's nineteenth annual exhibition (#05498).
