Ambrose Everett Burnside was a Union General during the American civil war.
A graduate of West Point Military Academy, Burnside was briefly commander of the most important Union force in the American Civil War, the Army of the Potomac. He had previously turned down the role arguing that he did not think he was competent enough. His heavy defeat in command at the Battle of Fredricksburg suggests his concernes were justified and he subsequently resigned his command and served out the war in more junior roles. After the war Burnside served as Governor and then Senator for Rhode Island.
