Melville Madison Bigelow was a Profesor of Law at Boston.

Life:

He wrote numerous legal books, such as an Index of the cases overruled ... by the courts of America, England, and Ireland; from the earliest period to the present time (London, 1873). He was co-author with William Wetmore Story of A Treatise on the Law of Contracts (1874). It may be that JW knew him through Story.
