LE Sunday 189
before leaving

My dear friend,

I have given notice at Terminus that the letter is to go to you, if it comes there. As I wrote last night, the cheque is of no use to me, so please destroy it.

A registered letter in France is not delivered unless to the person to whom it is addressed. I think this is so every where, & in order that one may be on hand when it arrives, a notice should accompany it, as it must [p. 2] be signed for by the person to whom it is sent.

I said, I think, in my letter, to wait until I saw you, however, it makes no difference, only I'm sorry you should have taken the trouble.

As to your letter of the 5th June[3], you will very easily see how the misapprehension occurred when you see it in London. It is too long a tale to write, as my cab goes in a few minutes. Perhaps we may hit it off on something else when you come to London. When I arrive, I will write to you.

[p. 3] I forgot to say that I heard from Mr. Sauter[4] and had a letter from Vienna[5], the gist of which I will communicate to you when I have a chance to unravel the Gothic characters. In haste,

Yours Sincerely,

E. G. Kennedy.

J. McNeil Whistler Esq.
