Dear Mrs. Leyland

I wish I could have known sooner when you were to return - also why not have telegraphed when you were to arrive so that you might have been met at the Station! What a pity that you should not have allowed me to save you any trouble that I at all could -

I shall call tomorrow at one o'clock - and hope to find you and Miss Caird[3] in good health [p. 2] and spirits - I wish enough you had gone to the Grosvenor[4] - or anywhere else that was not too gloomy for you -

Of course I am in endless complications and have a diplomatic dinner to come off here on Wednesday - What am I to do - Burne Jones[5] and that man George Howard[6] among them - the rest dont [sic] matter -

Things are very dreary here otherwise -

Do stay over this week and go down on Monday if necessary -

With Very kindest regards

J A McN.Whistler -

I have not had a word from Freddie or the girls[7] since
