John Boyd Thacher was a wealthy businessnman and collector. He married Emma Treadwell in 1872.

Life:

Thacher was born in New York State and inherited the family business Thacher Car Wheel Works from his father. He became a prominent public figure, entering the New York state senate on a Democrat ticket in 1883. He was a committed social reformer particularly in the area of housing and prisons. In 1890, he was appointed a member of the commission for the World's Columbian Exhibition by President Harrison. Thacher was a keen collector of fine book editions. His collection also reflected his interest in fifteenth century printing.
