Mariana Alley Griswold Van Rensselaer was an art critic, poet and writer. She was the daughter of the prosperous New York merchant George Griswold. In 1873 she married Schuyler Van Rensselaer. They lived in New Brunswick, New Jersey, until 1884.

Life:

Mariana Van Rensselaer contributed numerous articles on art, architecture and landscaping to newspapers and journals. She was the author of American Etchers (1886), and Henry Hobson Richardson and his Works (Boston, 1888). She was also one of the earliest supporters of the sculptor Saint-Gaudens. She and her husband were social acquaintances of JW.
