James W. Paton was the Curator of the Glasgow Industrial Museum in 1891.
Paton was one of the recipients of an artists' petition for the Glasgow Coporation to purchase JW's Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 2: Portrait of Thomas Carlyle (YMSM 137) (#12326). He also negotiated with JW over the purchase in March and April 1891.
