He was married to Frances Newman, who was, like Newman, born in Chelsea; she was 51 at the time of the 1881 census.


Edmund Newman, solicitor was admitted to the Bar in 1851 and became a Commissioner for Oaths. By 1859 he was living at 45 South Street, Chelsea. In 1863 he was listed as a solicitor and commissioner to administer oaths in Chancery, Queen's Bench Common Pleas and Exchequer, living at 280 King's Road, Chelsea, and remained there into the 1880s. He was in frequent communication with WHistler's lawyer, James Anderson Rose, in the late 1870s.
