He was Whistler's drawing master in St Petersburg, and was himself a pupil and assistant of Bryullov.
He added a sketch in 1847 to Whistler's St Petersburg Sketchbook, (M.7, p. 7). Whistler was clearly fond of him, and sent him a box of paints when he went to live in England.
