Identity:
Richard Woodriff Jaffray was the son of John Richmond Jaffray and Caroline Eliza Woodriff. He married Abbie Snelling Hamilton, the daughter of Thomas Hamilton and Catherine Whistler (AMW's sister-in-law).
Life:
His father, John Richmond Jaffray, was a successful merchant of laces and dry goods in London. In 1809, his uncle Robert Jaffray, opened a branch house in New York City. In 1852, the firm was re-organized as E. S. Jaffray & Co. (Edward S. Jaffray's daughter, Florence, married John Richmond Piers Woodriff, giving rise to Richard Woodriff Jaffray's middle name). Richmond W. Jaffray was one of the partners.
