Identity:
Captain Edward Clifton Griffith (later Lieutenant Coplonel) was a gallery landlord. His widow, Margaret Henderson Griffith, died in 14 January 1925.
Life:
Griffith was the proprietor of the London gallery where Whistler held his first one-man show, Mr Whistler's Exhibition, Flemish Gallery, Pall Mall, London, 1874. Whistler redecorated the gallery, and Griffith threatened proceedings if gallery was not reinstated to its original decorative state; on 29 January 1875, Griffith issued a writ claiming back rent and costs of repair to the gallery (see E. C. Griffith to JW, #12140).
