Identity:

William Tilbury Fox was a physician and surgeon. He was the son of Luther Owen Fox, M.D., of Broughton, Winchester.

Life:

Fox, who studied at University College, London from 1853 to 1858, specialised in dermatology and obstetrics, and built up a large dermatological practice in Sackville Street, Piccadilly. He also worked and taught in the skin departments of Charing Cross Hospital and University College Hospital. His books, Skin Diseases of Parasitic Origin (1863) and Atlas of Skin Diseases (1875-1877) made his reputation. He was also among the editorial staff of the Lancet. It was while he was in preparation for the Presidency of the dermatological section of the British Medical Association at Cork, that he died from angina.

In 1867 Fox was in correspondence with JW concerning the death of Dr James Reeves Traer, who was the medical partner of JW's brother-in-law Francis Seymour Haden (#01487). JW wanted a letter to be published in the Lancet concerning the circumstances of Traer's death and Haden's ill treatment of him (#02474).
