Winthrop Astor Chanler, soldier and sportsman (keen on fox-hunting) and friend of the artist Harper Pennington. Pennington mentioned him to JW, implying they had met.


The family were patrons of John Singer Sargent; a portrait of Elizabeth Winthrop Chanler (Mrs John Jay Chapman) painted in 1893 is now in the Smithsonian Museum of American Art.
