William Carter lived mainly in Swaffham in Norfolk, but also spent some time in London. He was the son of the painter Samuel John Carter and the brother of the egyptologist Howard Carter.

Life:

He studied at the Royal Academy schools and exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1883 and 1938. All his exhibits at the Royal Academy were portraits, however he also exhibited still-lifes and animal paintings at the Grosvenor Gallery, the New Gallery and elsewhere. He was a member of the Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Society of British Artists under Whistler's presidency.
