Identity:

Hector Caffieri was a landscape painter and watercolourist.

Life:

Caffieri studied in Paris under Bonnat and J. Lefebvre. His works include French Fishermen (Capetown) and Morning in Bologne (Sydney). He exhibited in Britain at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Grosvenor Gallery, New Gallery, Agnew and Sons Gallery, Dudley Gallery and Society of British Artists. Bigland also exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colours, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and Manchester City Art Gallery. He also exhibited at the Salon in Paris.

In 1876 Caffieri was elected a member of the Society of British Artists, a society in which JW served as President from 1886 to 1888. At Caffieri's resignation in 1887, JW expressed regret, describing him as a 'charming man [...] and nice - and pleasant!' (#13121). Caffieri was also a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, having been elected in 1885, and of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters which he joined in 1894.
