Life:
Brewerton graduated from USMA, West Point, NY, in 1819. He was later appointed Assistant Professor of Engineering there. He was engineer-in-chief of the fortifications and defences of Baltimore harbor from 1861 to 1864. In March 1865, he was brevetted Brigadier-General and retired in 1867. Dickinson College conferred upon him the degree of LL.D. in 1847. AMW knew him personally, as he was one of the tutors of JW at West Point.
