David Bates was a Midlands landscape painter.


Bates, who worked in Birmingham and Worcester, making many small oil sketches of hedgerows and plant life. His style was close to other artists of the Birmingham School, including Joseph Thors and S. H. Baker. He exhibited between 1868-1904 at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Cambrian Academy, Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham, British Institution, Fine Art Society, Grosvenor Gallery, New Gallery and Society of British Artists, a society that elected JW its President in 1886.
