He graduated from the Naval Academy of Annapolis. He served through the Civil War, rising to the rank of Commander and then resigned. He studied law and practiced his profession in Albany and New York. He was a partner in the firm of Kennedy and Co., bankers, for twelve years. He married Suzan Bainbridge. AMW knew him as a child and commented on his progress and success in the Naval Academy.
