William Henry Appleton was a publisher and was the friend of many artists and writers.


Appleton formed the Appleton publishing house with his father Daniel in 1838 under the name D. Appleton & Co. He was later joined by his brothers in the business. The firm published text books and scientific publications and Appleton became acquainted with major scientific figures like T. H. Huxley and Charles Darwin. It also produced travel guides and memoirs, especially of the American Civil War. The first Appleton's Cyclopedia of Biography was published in 1865. Later, Appleton became interested in publishing JW's lithographic series, Songs on Stone (1891).
