Notes:

1. †R. and J. E. Low
Agents representing Major Ashe.

2. †ALS
'20 March ... Major Ashe' is written in another hand at top right.

3. †Major Ashe
Major Walter Ashe (b. ca 1842), army officer and writer [more]. On 20 February 1879 JW asked his lawyer, J. A. Rose, to locate Ashe about some 'furniture for him' (#08763). It is not entirely clear exactly why JW owed Ashe money: at his bankruptcy, an IOU from Ashe to JW for £36.19.4 is mentioned as among JW's assets, but one which could not be redeemed since Ashe could not be located (London Bankruptcy Court, 7 May 1879, #11711).

4. †LAND AGENTS
'LAND AGENTS ... MANAGERS' is printed on the left.
