Statement of Defence delivered the Sixth day of December 1877 by Messrs Walker Martineau and Company at No. 13 Kings Road Grays Inn in the County of Middlesex[,] Defendants Solicitor

1.  The Defendant admits the Allegation contained in paragraph 3 of the Statement of Claim Subject to the production at the Trial by the Plaintiff of a copy of the Said Pamphlet for reference

#2.  The alleged libel is privileged as being a fair and bonâ fide criticism upon a painting[5] which the Plaintiff had exposed for Public view.

3.  Save as aforesaid the Defendant denies the allegations in paragraphs 3 and 5 of the Statement of Claim.
