Dear Mr Whistler:

You see by this note of Mr McKim's[3] that he evidently does have it clearly in mind that things are going forward - and is not confused by not hearing from you. He gives the demensions [sic] of the large panel[4] as I thought them - but does not speak, of course, of the Osgood[5] panels. Perhaps this cutting may amuse [p. 2] you, wh[ich]. I got indeed from Elwell[6], who wanted you to see it - It is from a Chicago daily I think. The pencil note in McKim's letter are the dem[en]sions [sic] of the hall.

Charles Follen McKim (1847-1909), architect, of McKim, Mead and White, New York [more], who designed Boston Public Library, 1888-95. McKim's letter, and the press-cutting, have not been located.

There was a project to get JW to paint a panel for Boston Public Library, but it is empty to this day, although JW did make preliminary designs, Study for Three Decorative Panels Representing 'The Landing of Columbus', 'Queen Isabel la Católica of Spain' and 'Queen Elizabeth of England' (YMSM 396).

5.  Osgood
Osgood, possibly connected with Boston Public Library, unidentified [more].

6.  Elwell
Possibly D. Jerome Elwell (1847-1912), landscape and marine painter [more].
