Gentlemen,

I am in receipt of your letter of 21st Inst.

I regret that I do not see any way to pay the charge for cleaning my picture[3]: The cleaning was done solely because Mr Whistler thought it would look better, & had I wished it cleaned, I should have had it [p. 2] done myself before I moved it into the Country.

You mention the fact of Mr. Whistler having been put to several expenses connected with the Exhibition[4], but you omit to state on the other side of the account, the profits arising from the Exhibition, all pictures exhibited being lent free of cost.
