[p. 2] TO ALL WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME James Abbott McNeill Whistler of No. 7 Lindsey Row Chelsea in the County of Middlesex Artist - SENDs GREETING WHEREAS the said James Abbott McNeill Whistler is about to leave England and proceed to America

NOW THESE PRESENTS WITNESS THAT THE SAID James Abbott McNeill Whistler - DOth HEREBY MAKE ORDAIN CONSTITUTE AND APPOINT James Anderson Rose - OF No. 11 Salisbury Street Strand - IN THE said County of Middlesex Gentleman his TRUE AND LAWFUL ATTORNEY AND AGENT FOR him AND IN his NAME OR OTHERWISE AND ON his BEHALF TO negotiate for the sale and to sell fifteen etched copper plates[3] and to receive the money and give receipts in the name of the said James Abbott McNeill Whistler for the same and as part of the conditions of such sale to undertake and agree in his name that he will not publish any other etchings in England or elsewhere within two years of the date of such sale and also that he will give up all proofs taken from the said fifteen etched copper plates except six sets of impressions to be kept or give by the said James Abbott McNeill Whistler to his relations or friends
AND GENERALLY DO PERFORM AND EXECUTE ALL AND EVERY SUCH ACT AND ACTS DEED AND DEEDS IN AND ABOUT THE PREMISES AS he THE SAID James Anderson Rose - SHALL THINK PROPER AS FULLY AND EFFECTUALLY TO ALL INTENT AND PURPOSES WHATSOEVER AS THE SAID James Abbott McNeill Whistler MIGHT OR COULD DO IF PERSONALLY PRESENT AND ALSO TO SUBSTITUTE AND APPOINT ANY PERSON OR PERSON TO ACT UNDER OR IN THE PLACE OF THE SAID James Anderson Rose - IN ALL OR ANY OF THE MATTERS AFORESAID AND EVERY SUCH SUBSTITUTION OR PLEASURE TO REVOKE THE SAID James Abbott McNeill Whistler - HEREBY AGREEING TO RATIFY AND CONFIRM WHATSOEVER THE SAID James Anderson Rose - OR his SUBSTITUTE OR SUBSTITUTES SHALL LAWFULLY DO OR CAUSE TO BE DONE IN OR ABOUT THE PREMISES BY VIRTUE OF THESE PRESENTS. -
