Charming my dear Mr Spielmann, and most daintily done -

I am very greatly pleased with the spirit and Good taste of the whole work[3] - and beg to thank you for the trouble you have taken and sympathy you show in [p. 2] what so well presents me to the people -

I hope you will come down and see me again soon -

Meanwhile I hope also that you will approve of the one or two very slight additions or changes that I bring about in the text - They are only the result of your already very pretty 'arrangement' -

Very sincerely Yrs

J McN. Whistler

Notes:

1.  [8/10 June 1888]
Dated from likely reference to interview with the Pall Mall Gazette (see below).

2.  Marion Henry Spielmann
Marion Henry Alexander Spielmann (1858-1948), journalist and writer on art [more].

3.  work
Probably a reference to Spielmann's recent interview with JW which appeared in the Pall Mall Gazette on 11 June 1888 (see Anon., 'The Rise and Fall of the Whistler Dynasty. An Interview with exPresident Whistler,' The Pall Mall Gazette: An Evening Newspaper and Review, vol. 47, no. 7249, 11 June 1888, pp. 1-2, and an edited version in Whistler, James McNeill, The Gentle Art of Making Enemies, 2nd ed., London and New York, 1892, pp. 205-210). It concerns recent events at the Royal Society of British Artists. In the interview, given in the aftermath of his resignation as President, JW defended his views and attacked Wyke Bayliss (1835-1906), painter and architect [more], who had been elected to succeed him. For further details, see Dorment, Richard, and Margaret F. MacDonald, James McNeill Whistler, exhibition catalogue, National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1995, pp. 49-55, and JW to M. H. Spielmann, #10944, #10938.
