Identity:
Israel Zangwill was a novelist, playwright, and Zionist leader.
Life:
Zangwill grew up in the East End of London, and many of his writings reflect his experiences of Jewish emigré life, notably Children of the Ghetto: A Study of a Peculiar People (1892). From 1896, he became a spokesman for Zionism although he later broke away from its mainstream to form the Jewish Territorial Organization for the Settlement of the Jews Within the British Empire.
He is referred to in JW's correspondence about 1897.
