Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida was a genre and marine painter.

Life:

He studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Valencia, later moving to Rome on a scholarship and from there to Paris. During his early career he focused on plein air painting and developed a taste for modern life subjects. Having exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in 1901, he became acquainted with the work of Scandinavian painters such as Anders Zorn, a notable influence. From 1906 Sorolla devoted himself to coastal and beach scenes which are distinctive for their dramatic play on light and pattern.
