Life:

A graduate of USMA, West Point, NY, Henry Coppée served in the Mexican War as a lieutenant and was breveted captain for gallantry at Contreras and Churubusco. He was Professor of English at West Point from 1850 to 1855, and professor of English Literature and History in the University of Pennsylvania 1855-1866. During the Mexican war he served as an officer in the American army. His most important work was A History of the Conquest of Spain by the Arab Moors (1881). He tutored JW at West Point.
