Joseph Chamberlain was a Birmingham politician and influential British statesman. His first wife Harriet Kenrick died soon after giving birth to their second child, Austen. He married her cousin, Florence Kenrick, in 1868; she bore him four children, including Neville, and died in childbirth in 1875. In 1888 he married an American, Mary Endicott. Both Austen and Neville followed their father into politics.
He was Colonial Secretary in the Conservative and Unionist government of Lord Salisbury in the period up to and during the Boaer War (1899-1902).
