Dr George Bird was a physician. His sister Alice L. Bird (b. ca 1833) is referred to in Whistler's correspondence. He was married but his wife is not mentioned in the 1881 census. He was the father of Elfrida Elizabeth, who married Luke Ionides.
Bird was a good friend of Whistler's. He was away during the Whistler v. Ruskin trial in November 1878, and on his return in December, Whistler urged him to buy a copy of his pamphlet Whistler v. Ruskin: Art and Art Critics, saying 'you ought to have been here at the fight! [...] together you and I could whip the crowd' (#00303).
