Maurice Bernhard was the illegitimate only child of Sarah Bernhard, arguably the most famous actress of the 19th century (she died in his arms in 1923). His father was the Belgian nobleman Charles Joseph Eugene Henri, Prince de Ligne. Maurice married the Polish princess Maria Jablonowska.
