H. Francis Bate was a landscape, figure and portrait painter.

Life:

Bate studied at the South Kensington Schools and at the Antwerp Academy of Arts under Charles Verlat. He exhibited his paintings in London at the Grosvenor Gallery, Goupil Gallery, London Salon, New English Art Club, Royal Society of British Artists (of which Whistler was president between 1886-1888), as well as the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham, Manchester City Art Gallery, Walker Art Gallery Liverpool and Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. In 1887 he was elected a member of the New English Art Club, acting as Honorary Treasurer from 1885 to 1886 and Honorary Secretary from 1888 to 1919.

Bate was among those proposed invitees to a dinner organised by W. C. Symons to congratulate JW on being made an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Munich, a dinner which was to be held at the Criterion in Piccadilly on 1 May 1889 (#05636).
