Dear Rose -

Do arrange with the lawyers about this matter of Craft[5] - I had forgotten all about it - or rather I had heard no more of it and I am so woefully hard at work - and the most important thing is that I should appear well at the Grosvenor[6] - so that I cannot hunt about for the money until I have finished my pictures, which are now nearly completed - Tell Lawson[7] to call on Newman[8] [p. 2] and ask him to wait until the 27th when my pictures will be done and I can pay him -

Let Lawson try and get until the first Saturday in May for me if he can when I will undertake to pay the sum in a lump -

What I do want is quiet until I can just get my paintings done - and then every bodys money is quite safe -

Elizabeth Mary Susannah Craft, cheesemonger in Knightsbridge, trading as 'John Craft' [more].

6.  Grosvenor
At the 2nd Summer Exhibition, Grosvenor Gallery, London, 1878, JW showed seven paintings (cat. nos. 24, 52-57). Exhibited as 'Variations in Flesh-colour and Green', Variations in Flesh Colour and Green: The Balcony (YMSM 56) had probably not been worked on for several years. Nocturne in Blue and Silver (YMSM 151) dates from the early seventies. Both 'Nocturne in Blue and Gold', which may be Nocturne: Grey and Silver (YMSM 156), and 'Nocturne in Grey and Gold', which is Nocturne: Grey and Gold - Chelsea Snow (YMSM 174), were long finished. 'Harmony in Blue and Yellow' has not been identified. This leaves two portraits of Maud Franklin, which were indeed completed in time for the show: Arrangement in Blue and Green (YMSM 193) and Arrangement in White and Black (YMSM 185). It is possible that other works were not ready in time.

This is probably Lawson James McCreary, clerk to the solicitor, J. A. Rose [more].

8.  Edmund Newman
Edmund Newman (b. ca 1829), of Newman and Payne, solicitor [more].
