Identity:
Douglas Straight was a lawyer, politician and editor.
Life:
Straight spent the early part of his career as a magazine and newspaper journalist before being called to the bar in 1865. He went on to spend a period in the practice of criminal law before his election as MP for Shrewsbury in 1870. From then on he seems to have combined a career in law, journalism and politics. He was editor of the Pall Mall Gazette from 1896-1902. Like JW he was a member of the Beefsteak Club and is referred to in JW's correspondence about 1897.
