Hugh Maxwell married Agnes Stevenson and had four children. He had a farm house near Nyack, NY, which he shared with Ann Maxwell; he was probably related to her.
He was District attorney of New York County (1817-18, 1821-29). In 1849 President Taylor appointed him collector of the port, and he held this position through the administrations of Presidents Taylor and Fillmore.
